Milton Hershey – Sweet Success

Introduction: Milton Hershey was an American businessman and philanthropist, best known for founding the Hershey Chocolate Company. Born in 1857 in Derry Township, Pennsylvania, Hershey grew up in poverty and had little formal education. However, he went on to become a successful entrepreneur and a major philanthropist, using his wealth to support education and the well-being of children.

Early Life

Milton Hershey was born on September 13, 1857, in Derry Township, Pennsylvania. His parents were of Swiss-German descent and were members of the Mennonite Church. Hershey’s father was a dreamer and an inventor, but his ventures often failed, leading to financial struggles for the family. Hershey attended school in a one-room schoolhouse but dropped out at the age of 14 to work as an apprentice in a candy and ice cream shop.

Business Career

Hershey worked in various candy and confectionery businesses before starting his own company, the Lancaster Caramel Company, in 1886. The company was a success, and Hershey became wealthy. However, he wanted to focus on chocolate and sold the Lancaster Caramel Company in 1900 to start the Hershey Chocolate Company. The Hershey Chocolate Company grew to become one of the largest and most successful chocolate companies in the world.

Philanthropy

Milton Hershey and his wife, Catherine Hershey, did not have children of their own, but they were committed to helping children in need. They founded the Hershey Industrial School in 1909 to provide education and training for orphaned boys. They also donated money to support public schools, hospitals, and other charitable causes.

Legacy

Milton Hershey died on October 13, 1945, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. His legacy as a successful businessman and philanthropist continues to this day. The Hershey Company is still a major player in the chocolate industry, and the Milton Hershey School (formerly the Hershey Industrial School) is still providing education and training to children in need.
