Unit Study: Preschool Family

Target Age Group:

Preschoolers (Ages 3-5) Grade Level: Pre-K


By the end of this unit study, preschoolers will be able to:

  1. Identify and name different family members.
  2. Understand the concept of family and its importance.
  3. Recognize and express feelings about their own family.
  4. Develop social and emotional skills through activities related to family.
  5. Gain a basic understanding of family diversity and inclusion.

Schedule: 5-Day Plan

Day 1: Introduction to Family

  • Introduce the concept of family and its role in our lives.
  • Discuss different family members (parents, siblings, grandparents, etc.).
  • Read books about families.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a family tree.

Day 2: My Family

  • Explore each child’s own family.
  • Share stories and experiences about family members.
  • Read books about families.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a family portrait.

Day 3: Family Activities

  • Focus on activities families do together (eating, playing, etc.).
  • Engage in role-playing and discussion about family time.
  • Read books about family activities.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a family collage.

Day 4: Family Diversity

  • Introduce the concept of diverse families (single-parent, blended, etc.).
  • Discuss the importance of respecting and accepting different family structures.
  • Read books about diverse families.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a “We Are Family” banner.

Day 5: Family Traditions

  • Discover family traditions and celebrations.
  • Discuss special occasions and holidays celebrated by families.
  • Read books about family traditions.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a family celebration craft.
