Unit Study: Preschool Ocean

Target Age Group:

Preschoolers (Ages 3-5) Grade Level: Pre-K


By the end of this unit study, preschoolers will be able to:

  1. Identify and name different ocean animals and plants.
  2. Understand basic ocean concepts such as tides, waves, and habitats.
  3. Recognize the importance of ocean conservation.
  4. Develop fine motor skills through arts and crafts activities related to the ocean.
  5. Gain a basic understanding of ocean-related concepts in science and nature.

Schedule: 5-Day Plan

Day 1: Introduction to the Ocean

  • Introduce the concept of the ocean and its vastness.
  • Discuss different ocean animals and plants.
  • Read books about the ocean.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create an ocean mural.

Day 2: Underwater Life

  • Explore the variety of ocean animals and their characteristics.
  • Learn about fish, sharks, dolphins, and other marine creatures.
  • Read books about underwater life.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a paper plate fish.

Day 3: Ocean Habitats

  • Focus on different ocean habitats (coral reefs, kelp forests, etc.).
  • Discuss the unique features of each habitat and the animals that live there.
  • Read books about ocean habitats.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a coral reef diorama.

Day 4: Tides and Waves

  • Discover the concept of tides and waves in the ocean.
  • Learn about how tides and waves are formed.
  • Read books about tides and waves.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a tidal wave artwork.

Day 5: Ocean Conservation

  • Introduce the concept of ocean conservation and protecting marine life.
  • Discuss the importance of reducing plastic waste and pollution.
  • Read books about ocean conservation.
  • Arts and Crafts: Create a sea turtle craft.
