Understanding Self-Identity and Personal Values

Self-identity is like a unique fingerprint of your personality. It’s made up of different aspects such as your likes and dislikes, your beliefs, your experiences, and your aspirations. It’s what makes you, you!

Why Personal Values Matter

Your values are like a compass that guides you. They are the beliefs and principles that you feel are important. These values might include honesty, kindness, creativity, or courage. They help you make decisions and shape how you interact with the world around you.

Activity: Discovering Your Identity and Values

Let’s do a fun activity to explore your self-identity and values.

  1. Who Am I?: Write down answers to the following questions:
    • What are my favorite hobbies or activities?
    • What subjects do I enjoy most at school and why?
    • What makes me happy or excited?
    • What are some challenges I’ve faced and overcome?
  2. My Values: Think about what matters most to you. List out five values that you think are important in life. For example, respect, friendship, learning, etc.
  3. Vision Board: Create a vision board that represents your identity and values. You can use magazine cutouts, drawings, or any other materials. Place pictures and words that resonate with who you are and what you believe in.

Reflection

After completing your vision board, reflect on the following questions:

  • How do the items on my vision board represent me?
  • Were there any surprises about what I value?
  • How can I use my understanding of my identity and values to make decisions in my life?

Understanding your self-identity and values is a key step in growing up. It helps you make choices that are true to yourself and navigate the exciting world of middle school. Remember, your identity and values might change over time, and that’s perfectly okay. It’s all part of the amazing journey of being you!
