The story of Jesus healing a paralyzed man shows Jesus’ power to heal and forgive sins. This event, where friends bring a paralyzed man to Jesus, is a powerful example of faith and friendship, found in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 2.
The Faithful Friends
Bible Verse: Mark 2:3-4
“Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.”
Four friends brought a paralyzed man to Jesus, but they couldn’t reach Him because of the crowd. So, they climbed onto the roof of the house where Jesus was teaching, made a hole, and lowered their friend down to Jesus. Their actions showed their great faith and determination.
Jesus’ Response
Bible Verse: Mark 2:5
“When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, ‘Son, your sins are forgiven.'”
Jesus was impressed by their faith. He first addressed the man’s spiritual need by forgiving his sins, which surprised the people around him.
Questioning Jesus’ Authority
Bible Verse: Mark 2:6-7
“Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, ‘Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?'”
Some religious leaders in the crowd questioned Jesus’ authority to forgive sins. They thought only God could forgive sins and that Jesus was saying something wrong.
Proof of Jesus’ Authority
Bible Verse: Mark 2:8-11
“Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, ‘Why are you thinking these things?… But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.’ So he said to the man, ‘I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.'”
To show that He had the authority to forgive sins, Jesus also healed the man’s physical condition. He told the paralyzed man to get up and walk, and the man did just that.
The Crowd’s Amazement
Bible Verse: Mark 2:12
“He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, ‘We have never seen anything like this!'”
The man stood up, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. The crowd was amazed and praised God, acknowledging that they had witnessed something extraordinary.
