The story of Joseph and his brothers is a tale of dreams, jealousy, and forgiveness, found in the Bible from Genesis 37 to Genesis 50. Let’s explore the key parts of Joseph’s journey.
Joseph’s Special Coat and His Dreams
Bible Verse: Genesis 37:3-5
“Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons… And he made a richly ornamented robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him… Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more.”
Joseph was the favorite son of his father, Jacob, who gave him a beautiful, colorful coat. This made his brothers very jealous. Joseph also had dreams that one day his family would bow down to him, which made his brothers even more jealous.
Joseph Sold by His Brothers
Bible Verse: Genesis 37:23-28
“So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe… and they took him and threw him into the cistern… As they sat down to eat their meal, they looked up and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites… and they sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver.”
Joseph’s brothers were so jealous that they decided to get rid of him. They took his special coat and sold him as a slave to traders who were going to Egypt.
Joseph in Egypt
Bible Verse: Genesis 39:2-3
“The Lord was with Joseph so that he prospered, and he lived in the house of his Egyptian master… When his master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord gave him success in everything he did, Joseph found favor in his eyes and became his attendant.”
In Egypt, Joseph worked for a man named Potiphar. God was with Joseph, and everything he did was successful. Potiphar noticed this and put Joseph in charge of his house.
Joseph’s Rise to Power
Bible Verse: Genesis 41:39-41
“Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has made all this known to you, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be in charge of my palace, and all my people are to submit to your orders. Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.'”
Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and warned him about a coming famine. Impressed by Joseph’s wisdom, Pharaoh made him the second most powerful man in Egypt, in charge of storing grain for the famine.
Reunion and Forgiveness
Bible Verse: Genesis 45:4-5
“Then Joseph said to his brothers, ‘I am Joseph! Is my father still living?’ But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. Then Joseph said, ‘Come close to me… Do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you.'”
During the famine, Joseph’s brothers came to Egypt to buy food. They did not recognize Joseph at first. When Joseph revealed himself, they were scared, but Joseph forgave them. He understood that God had used their actions for good.
