Grasslands, also known as prairies or savannas, are vast expanses of land characterized by the presence of tall grasses and a lack of trees. They can be found on every continent except Antarctica and cover approximately one-quarter of the Earth’s land surface.
There are two types of grasslands:
- Temperate
- Tropical
Temperate grasslands are found in the middle latitudes and are characterized by hot summers and cold winters. They are home to a variety of grasses, as well as animals such as bison, pronghorns, and prairie dogs. Examples of temperate grasslands include the Great Plains of North America, the Pampas of South America, and the steppes of Europe and Asia.
Famous grasslands in the world:
- Great Plains, North America: The Great Plains stretch across the central part of North America, covering parts of the United States and Canada. It is one of the largest grasslands in the world and is home to a variety of wildlife including bison, prairie dogs, and pronghorns.
- Pampas, South America: The Pampas is a grassland region in South America, covering parts of Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. It is known for its vast open plains and is home to a variety of wildlife including capybaras, rheas, and pumas.
- African Savannah: The African savannah is a grassland ecosystem that covers much of Africa, from Kenya and Tanzania in the east to South Africa in the south. It is home to some of the world’s most iconic wildlife, such as lions, elephants, and zebras.
- Eurasian Steppe: The Eurasian Steppe is a vast grassland that stretches from Hungary in the west to China in the east. It is known for its harsh climate and is home to a variety of wildlife including wild horses, wolves, and saiga antelopes.
- Australian Rangelands: The Australian rangelands are a series of grasslands and savannas that cover much of the interior of Australia. It is home to a variety of unique wildlife including kangaroos, wallabies, and emus.
Tropical grasslands, also known as savannas, are found closer to the equator and are characterized by a wet and dry season. They are home to tall grasses, as well as trees and shrubs. Some examples of animals found in tropical grasslands include elephants, zebras, and giraffes. The African savanna is perhaps the most well-known example of a tropical grassland.
Grasslands are important ecosystems that provide a home to many species of plants and animals. They are also important for human use, as they can be used for grazing livestock and growing crops. However, grasslands are also under threat from human activities such as agriculture and development, as well as climate change.
