Parts Of A Story

Every story has different parts that work together to create a complete narrative. Understanding the different parts of a story can help you become a better reader and writer. In this lesson, we will learn about the key parts of a story.

Characters

Characters are the people, animals, or creatures in a story. They are the ones who drive the action forward and make the story interesting. Characters can be the main focus of a story or can support the main character.

Setting

The setting is where and when the story takes place. This can include the physical location, time period, weather, and social environment. The setting can also influence the mood and tone of the story.

Plot

The plot is the sequence of events that make up the story. It includes the problem or conflict that the characters face, the rising action where tension builds, the climax where the conflict is resolved, and the falling action where the story wraps up.

Theme

The theme is the message or lesson that the author wants the reader to learn from the story. It can be an underlying idea, moral, or point of view. Themes can be universal or specific to the story.

Point of view

Point of view refers to the perspective from which the story is told. It can be first-person (using “I” or “we” to tell the story), second-person (using “you” to address the reader), or third-person (using “he,” “she,” or “they” to tell the story). The point of view can influence how the reader experiences the story and understands the characters.

Resolution

The resolution is the ending of the story where the conflict is resolved, and loose ends are tied up. It can be a happy or sad ending and can leave the reader with a sense of closure or anticipation for what might happen next.

Activity

Divide students into small groups and give them a short story to read. Then, have them identify the different parts of the story (characters, setting, plot, theme, point of view, and resolution) and discuss how each part contributes to the overall story. Afterward, have each group share their findings with the class.

Understanding the different parts of a story is essential to becoming a better reader and writer. By analyzing these elements, you can better understand how stories are constructed and appreciate the craft of storytelling.
