Definition and Types of Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition that occurs when the body is unable to properly process glucose, a type of sugar that is used as fuel by the body’s cells.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes – occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, the hormone that regulates glucose levels in the blood.

Type 2 Diabetes – occurs when the body becomes resistant to insulin or doesn’t produce enough insulin to properly regulate blood glucose levels.

History of Diabetes

The history of diabetes dates back thousands of years, with evidence of the condition being described in ancient texts from Egypt, India, and Greece.

Some of the most significant historical events and periods of diabetes include:

Discovery of Insulin – the discovery of insulin by Frederick Banting and Charles Best in the early 20th century, which revolutionized the treatment of type 1 diabetes.

Advancements in Treatment – the development of new medications and technologies to treat diabetes, such as oral medications, insulin pumps, and continuous glucose monitoring devices.

Impact of Diabetes

Diabetes has a profound impact on individuals and society, with its effects ranging from personal health to global economic costs.

Some of the ways diabetes impacts society include:

Healthcare Costs – diabetes is one of the most expensive conditions to treat, with healthcare costs totaling billions of dollars each year.

Quality of Life – diabetes can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, with complications such as blindness, kidney disease, and amputations.

Prevention and Management – there are many ways to prevent or manage diabetes, including lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise, regular blood glucose monitoring, and medication.
